Temporary Handicaps [May. 12th, 2008|09:29 am]
Elizabeth and Jessica are better than you.

I was thinking about this last night as I was falling asleep (I know, I need a life): Can you guys think of a time when a character in Sweet Valley was handicapped and stayed that way?

For example, we have poor heroically deaf Regina who goes to magic Switzerland and gets her hearing restored. Or Mike McAllery who is paralyzed and then magically not. Same with Enid when she's in the plane crash. And Ken Matthews is blind for one book and then he gets his sight back at the end.

What gives? Does Sweet Valley have healing properties? Should I go to the nearest hospital and round up the deaf/blind/paralyzed people to cure them?

I don't know that Sweet Valley has magical healing properties. The one common denominator is Wakefield meddling. The only permanent handicap I can think of is sociopathy, but I don't know that Jessica views that as a hindrance.

Ha! It's not a handicap; it's a path to success!

Don't forget MS that turns out to be Mono!

I can't think of anything permanent, either.

Oooh, I have two permanent ones from SVT. Un-tragically deaf Anna and Pamela Jacobs (from #10) with the heart condition (don't do coke, Pam!).

Don't forget magical one-week leukemia!

Do we ever hear from Anna and Pam again?

Thankfully, people die and stay dead. Right?

Don't forget all the people with mousy brown hair. In Sweet Valley, that is absolutely a handicap.

You could be on to something there. If being overweight, wearing glasses, or having mousey brown hair in SV does indeed qualify as a handicap, then the list of SV people "cured" of such ailments via "magical makeover" could go on and on...

No, you have to be PERFECT* in Sweet Valley. Earth-logic does not belong there.

* but not as perfect as the twins and their perfect heads.

Robin is magically cured of anorexia. Does that count?

Not a handicap, but doesn't Lois Waller remain eternally fat and disliked? She gets pity from Liz at times, but it never seems to help her in the long run. Like, Liz made her play a revenge prank on the Unicorns in SVT#1 but she goes back to being the girl everyone hates because she's fat, like, immediately!

The chronologically last time I remember her is when she tried running for student council president in the Unicorn Club books, and she ends up resigning in tears because Lila and Jessica made a poster of her as a whale or something.

But I read hardly any SVH so I don't know if she has any role then!

In SVH Amy is mentally challenged and seems to get a lot worse as the series progresses
